Man commits suicide in Lagos

*Corpse removed before alerting police —PPRO

Tragedy struck in Okokomaiko, Ojo Local Government, Lagos State, when a man committed suicide, hanging himself. Saturday Vanguard gathered that the incident occurred after efforts by the deceased, identified as Papa Ugochukwu, to resolve the fued between his wife, mother-in-law and their Pastor, proved abortive.

Minutes after embarking on the act, residents disclosed that the lifeless body of the deceased was discovered by co-tenants who raised the alarm, attracting passers-by and other tenants of the one-storey building sited on Kemberi road, Okokomaiko.

It was gathered that the deceased relatives removed the body which was found clutched to the ceiling fan in his parlour.

Before committing suicide on Friday, December 1, the deceased allegedly destroyed his Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) cards and left a suicide note on the table. Sources said that in the suicide note, the deceased narrated what transpired before embarking on the act which ended his life, alleging that his wife and mother-in-law were his problems.

It was alleged that on sighting the note, the wife made away with the note to cover the allegations leveled against them by the deceased.

Confirming the tragedy, the Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, Lagos command, Chike Oti, yesterday, noted that though the law enforcement agents were yet to arrest anyone, but stressed that investigation was still ongoing.

The PPRO hinted that the body recovered from the scene had been allegedly taken away to the deceased hometown before the complaints were lodged at the Okokomaiko police station.

“They have taken the body away before reporting at the Okokomaiko police station. Also, during investigation, we learnt that a suicide note was left behind by the deceased but was not presented while reporting the case at the station.”

Sources told Saturday Vanguard that the police have spread its drag net due some doubt surrounding the deceased’s death.

Pastor in Trouble for Killing a Snake in Anambra State

An altercation has ensued between members of the Pentecostal
Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North
Local Government Area of Anambra State over the killing of a snake in
the community by the General Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji,
Rev Jude Chubueze.

Rev Chibueze said a snake stormed his house at night when members of his family were already
sleeping. He said he heard his children screaming and rushed there to find a snake where his
children had been sleeping.

“When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into
the nearby bush.

The following day, some community members marched to my house and
accused me of killing their god.

They beat me up mercilessly. “They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890 which they said I should buy to appease their god.

Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.”

One of the community leaders, Chief Paul Edekobi said, instead of the pastor doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community by providing the items, he dragged them to Ogidi Police
Station where six of the community leaders were arrested.

The Chief threatened that what he did was capable of wiping out his entire family if sacrifices were not made to appease the gods.

“We do not want to destroy his property and that is why we used the palm fronts to tie round the church to stop him from worshipping there for now,” Edekobi said.

But the pastor said: “What they are talking about is not tradition; they see the killing of a snake as a taboo in their world of idol worshipping and not same in Christian faith “If they do not desist from this act, our next port of call will be the court for the enforcement of our fundamental human rights.”@Masco Infinity

TRAGEDY: Woman Murders Husband With Machete Over Alleged Infidelity.

A woman, Mrs Nkem Uzorchukwu has been arrested by men of the Lagos state police command for using a machete to murder her husband, Mr. Chisom Uzorchukwu after accusing him of having a romantic affair with another lady.

An argument was said to have erupted between the couple after which the woman committed the dastardly act.

However, the man was said to have been quickly rushed to the hospital by neighbours, but later died due to the severe injuries incurred.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday honoured Mr Abdulsalam Kamaldeen Idowu, a disabled and former homeless street beggar for sponsoring himself through school to become a lawyer and political science graduate.

According to him, Abdulsalam Idowu displayed resilience and hard work by studying political science and law from street begging and despite being homeless for years sleeping at Idumota Motor Park in Lagos.

“Idowu lost his two legs to polio at the age of three, lost his mother at the age of four, started primary school at eight and resorted to street begging to raise money to buy uniforms, books and to feed.

“He begged for arms from primary through secondary school and was known on the streets of Lagos as a beggar.

“From street begging he bought GCE form in 2002, sat and passed the GCE and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam and was subsequently admitted to study political science at the University of Lagos.

“As he was preparing to complete his first degree, he sat for the West African School Certificate Examination and JAMB.

“In his determination to become a lawyer, passed the exams studied law and was later admitted to Nigerian Law School in 2015 and was called to the Nigerian Bar on Nov. 30 2016,’’ Gbajabiamila said.

CIA Agent Confesses On Deathbed: ‘I Killed Bob Marley’

Former CIA agent Bill Oxley has confessed on his deathbed to assassinating Bob Marley on behalf of the government.

A 79-year-old retired officer of the CIA, Bill Oxley, has made a series of stunning confessions since he was admitted to the Mercy Hospital in Maine on Monday and told he has weeks to live.

He claims he committed 17 assassinations for the American government between 1974 and 1985, including the music icon Bob Marley.

Mr. Oxley, who worked for the CIA for 29 years as an operative with top-level security clearances, claims he was often used as a hitman by the organization, to assassinate individuals who could represent a threat to the goals of the agency.

Trained as a sniper and marksman, Mr. Oxley also has significant experience with more unconventional methods of inflicting harm upon others, like poisons, explosives, induced heart attacks and cancer.

The 79-year-old operative claims he committed the assassinations between March 1974 and August 1985, at a time when he says the CIA “was a law unto itself.” He says he was part of an operative cell of three members which carried out political assassinations across the country and occasionally in foreign countries.

Most of their victims were political activists, journalists, and union leaders, but he also confesses to assassinating a few scientists, medical researchers, artists and musicians whose ideas and influence “represented a threat to the interests of the United States.”

He claims he had no problem with going through with the assassination of Bob Marley, because “I was a patriot, I believed in the CIA, and I didn’t question the motivation of the agency. I’ve always understood that sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the greater good.”
But Mr. Oxley confesses that Bob Marley remains unique among his victims, as he was the only victim he “felt anything for.”

“The others were assholes. Bob Marley was Bob Marley. I was no closer to being a long-haired hippy back then than I am now, but I must admit Bob’s music did move me. It held some power over me.”

He claims to have “mixed feelings” about Bob Marley’s death. On the one hand, Marley was “a good man, a beautiful soul” with “profound artistic gifts” who did not deserve to have his life cut short. But according to Mr. Oxley, Bob Marley was also placing the goals of the CIA in jeopardy and threatening the existence of the United States:

“He was succeeding in creating a revolution that used music as a more powerful tool than bullets and bombs. Bob Marley in 1976 was a very serious threat to the global status quo and to the hidden power brokers implementing their plan for a new world order.

As far as the agency was concerned, Bob Marley was too successful, too famous, too influential…

A Jamaican Rastaman who started using his funds and fame to support causes around the world that were in direct conflict with the CIA… To be honest, he signed his own death warrant.”

“It’s not like we didn’t warn him. We sent a few guys to shoot up his house in Kingston,” Mr Oxley says, referring to a shooting in the Marley residence that left the singer with an injured arm and chest. “We had a message for him.

We impressed upon him the gravity of the situation he found himself in. He didn’t listen.”

“Two days later, in the mountains, I stuck him with the pin.“

Two days after Bob Marley was shot in the left arm by one of three gunmen who ambushed the singer and some of his crew in his house in Kingston, and after a brief stint in hospital, Bob Marley travelled to the protective hills of the Blue Mountains and spent time at the highest point in Jamaica, rehearsing for an upcoming concert.

According to Mr. Oxley, he used press credentials to gain access to Bob Marley during his Blue Mountains retreat. He introduced himself as a famous photographer working for the New York Times, and gave Bob Marley a gift.

“I gave him a pair of Converse All Stars. Size 10. When he tried on the right shoe, he screamed out ‘OUUUCH.‘

“That was it. His life was over right there and then. The nail in the shoe was tainted with cancer viruses and bacteria. If it pierced his skin, which it did, it was goodnight nurse.”

“There had been a series of high-profile assassinations of counter-culture figures in the United States in the late sixties, early seventies. By the time Bob Marley’s time came around, we thought subtlety was the order of the day. No more bullets and splattered brains.”

Mr. Oxley says he kept close contact with Marley during the final years of his life, ensuring the medical advice he received in Paris, London and the United States “would hasten his demise rather than cure him.”

He died from cancer in May 1981. He was just 36 years old.

“He was very withdrawn, unbelievably small. He was shrinking in front of us. The cancer had done it’s job.”

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria is facing serious challenges due to manifold corruption and mismanagement of resources by previous administrations saying that is why the present government put in place measures to check the hydra-headed monster.

Buhari who spoke through the vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo at the graduation of Executive Course  39 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State mentioned Treasury Single Account (TSA) as one of the measures to curb financial recklessness and leakages.

He said the directive that all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) should open one account where federal revenues will go to has yielded positive results adding that  government is now sure of what it has in the account as ghost workers have been flushed out or reduced to the barest minimum, while money is being saved.

The president who said  it is because of the economic measures taken by government to tackle corruption head-on that Nigeria is exiting from financial recession added that government has made agriculture its focus in order to diversify the economy, while the economy is stabilising.

He expressed confidence that the naira will continue to appreciate.
“We are where we are today because of our failure to invest. I’m happy that the price of rice has dropped drastically while all the moribund fertilizer plants have been revived,” he said.

He asserted that government is seeing 2018 as the year of many plans as government is encouraging more industries thereby creating jobs for the teeming unemployed citizens of the country.

On security, he said government is doing all it could to cage and crush the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgency in the country, while appealing to the people to be religious tolerant.

To the participants, Buhari urged them to deploy the knowledge gained at the institute to help the nation in whatever capacity they find themselves, admitting that government is aware of the hardship the institute is facing and is committed to addressing the myriad of problems.

The acting Director-General of NIPSS, Mr. Jonathan Juma, congratulated the 66 participants on their successful completion of their course.

Juma appealed to government to approve special financial intervention for the Institute to enable it to address the catalogue of issues confronting it.

EFCC,DSS CLASH OVER ARREST OF EX-DG, EKPENYONG ITA

DSS bars EFCC from arresting ex-DG, Ekpenyong Ita

Drama is currently playing out at the home of a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Ekpenyong Ita, as men of the DSS are preventing operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from arresting him.

Our correspondent who is also at the scene, reports that EFCC operatives arrived at the scene around 11am with an arrest warrant.

The EFCC officials and armed policemen numbering over 50 attempted to enter the premises located at 46 Mamman Nasir Street,  Asokoro but the heavily armed DSS officials, some of which are wearing masks, refused to allow the EFCC men inside.

The DSS officials simply said they were acting on “orders from above”.
Ita has been under investigation for his alleged role in the disbursement of funds meant for arms.

While a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (Retd.) and other service chiefs have been arraigned,  the DSS has refused to release its own officials for probe.

The DSS and the EFCC have been at loggerheads for over a year which culminated in the DSS sending a report to the Senate not to confirm the acting Chairman of the EFCC,  Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

Governors want Buhari to Recontest... Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term project enjoys the support of most governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okorocha, who spoke when leaders of the Democratic Youths Congress visited him, yesterday, at the
Government House, Owerri, disclosed that with the exception of two or three, other governors across party divide wanted Buhari to re-contest.

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sam Onwuemeodo, quoted Okorocha as saying:  “Most governors including all the South-East governors are supporting President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term whether PDP, APC or APGA, except one or two of the governors in the country who are not in support.

“I am a believer in Buhari and I made it clear years ago that if he is running for president I will not run.  This is because I have seen a man that has the strength of character to lead this Nigeria at this moment of our history.  There is no better president for Nigeria now other than President Buhari.

He might not be the best president for Nigeria in 2023 or 2027, but for the Nigeria of today, he is the right man for the job.  His fight against corruption takes an unusual character to execute.  His style to end terrorism in the North East is again something that requires his personal character.

“Nigeria has come out of recession in the shortest period recorded in history and this is a testament to Buhari’s tenacity.  And since I have resolved with my political family to shelve my ambition and support Buhari, I want to appeal to others to show such support to him.”

But in a swift reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the claim that opposition governors were part of the Buhari reelection project.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye in a telephone interview  said Okorocha was known for making false claims  and urged Nigerians to disregard him.

The spokesman said the PDP governors were currently  working with the party’s leadership to ensure that its national convention slated for December 9 is successful.

“Our governors are not part of the Buhari reelection plan. Rochas Okorocha has a penchant for telling lies. Nobody should take him serious.

Our governors cannot be working for Buhari’s reelection. How can they be working for Buhari. On what ground should they be working for Buhari’s reelection?” Adeyeye queried.

When asked to comments on statement by the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi asking President Buhari to seek reelection in 2019, he said, “I don’t want to talk about Dave Umahi, but what I am telling you is that our governors are not working for Buhari’s reelection.”

Also reacting, Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose dismissed Okorocha’s claim as “mere comedy of error that shouldn’t be taken serious.”

   He added: “The claims is akin to an idle talk of beer parlour mates who are fond of emitting careless comic statements to deliberately create comic relief in a tension soaked atmosphere.”

According to the chairman of the PDP Governorship Forum who spoke through his Special Adviser on New media and Communication, Lere Olayinka:

“Buhari in the first place has not said he would contest in 2019 and so, you cannot be supporting what is not in existence.

Why would PDP governors be supporting what is not there?”

Woman fires man twice back head for...

A 21-year-old woman has allegedly shot a man in the back of the head because he performed a sex act wrong, Fox News reports.

Marissa E. Wallen, an escort allegedly told police she shot a man twice in the back of the head and left him for dead because he performed a sex act wrong. The victim wasn’t found for three days.

After he was found by police, he was taken to the hospital and unable to speak, but he communicated with hand signals.

Wallen is also accused of robbing the victim.

According to court documents:

Police received a call on Oct. 24 from the victim’s employer. The 36-year-old victim worked from home, and the employer was concerned he hadn’t logged in for work in the morning.

Police went to the victim’s location and found the door unlocked. Inside, police found the victim sitting against a wall in the master bedroom. The victim was unresponsive, but awake. The fire department was called and crews determined the victim had been shot twice in the head.

The victim was taken to Providence Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit.

Police obtained a search warrant to the victim’s house and determined credit cards and a handgun were missing from the home. However, there wasn’t any sign of forced entry. Police reviewed security footage from the victim’s home that showed a young woman coming to the home five different times between Oct. 7 and Oct. 21.

Police identified the woman as Marissa E. Wallen, and said it was clear from the footage that Wallen and the victim were having sexual relations.

Security footage from Oct. 21 showed the last time Wallen entered the home. She walked in and left a short time later. A check on the victim’s credit cards showed 82 charges totaling more than $10,000 was made between Oct. 22 and Nov. 5. Video footage showed Wallen using the victim’s credit cards at Macy’s and other locations.

Wallen was arrested. She ultimately admitted to police she was an escort and had been hired to have sex with the victim.

She told police she shot the victim twice in the back of the head for performing a sex act wrong. Wallen allegedly displayed little remorse.

“Wallen was clearly proud of her life as an escort and even asked us to call one of her clients so that he could post her bail,” court documents allege.

NIGERIANS across political divides, yesterday, paid glowing tributes to the late  Second Republic Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, who died in a London clinic, Sunday night after battling with what the family said was a chest infection.

Confirming his death in a statement, early yesterday morning, Ekwueme’s younger brother and traditional ruler of Oko community in Anambra State, HRH, Prof. Laz Ekwueme said the sad event occurred in London at about 10pm on Sunday.

He said: “The Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON. The sad event occurred at The London Clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday 19th November 2017.”

The elder statesman died a month after his 85th birthday. He fell ill 20 days ago after collapsing in his Enugu residence and was rushed to Memphys Hospital, Enugu from where he was flown to London, nine days ago.

Dr Ekwueme’s expiration elicited a flood of tributes, yesterday, with a host of eminent Nigerians and groups describing him as a detribalised Nigerian, advocate of restructured Nigeria, outstanding democrat, bridge builder, visionary peace lover, pillar of democracy, national icon, statesman, and legendary figure among others.

Those who paid tribute included President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President Bukola Saraki, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Rochas Okorocha (Imo),  David Umahi (Ebonyi), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun),  the apex Igbo organisation Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, and former Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Anthony Anenih.

President Buhari in his condolence message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, commiserated with Nigerians, the Government and people of Anambra State, on the death of the elder statesman.

He commiserated with the entire Oko Kingdom, the Aguata Council of Traditional Rulers, and the Ekwueme family, over the loss of the family’s patriarch, whose regular counsels on national issues and mediations for peaceful co-existence would be sorely missed.

Great loss to Ndigbo—S’East Governor’s Forum

Also reacting, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State and chairman of the South East Governors Forum, said Ekwueme’s death was a great loss to Ndigbo in particular and Nigeria in general adding that his death has marked the end of an era.

In statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Emmanuel Uzor, the governor, who disclosed that the South East zone through the governors would soon draw up programme on how to pay last respect to the fallen political Iroko, said: “The death of our father and leader, Dr Ekwueme, is so devastating especially now that his fatherly advice is needed most. He was a great Nigerian and great believer in the unity of the country. As his children, we have learned a lot from his deep political sagacity.

“As the vice President of Nigeria, Ekwueme was a great rallying factor of Igbo socio-political integration”

A huge loss to Nigeria, by Obasanjo, Amosun

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, saw Ekwueme’s demise as a great loss, describing him as a great Nigerian whose life had been a life of devotion and distinguished service to his fatherland.

Both Obasanjo and Amosun recalled the roles played by Ekwueme while he was alive and described him as an exemplary politician, selfless leader, relentless community leader, renowned architect and zealous philanthropist.

Obasanjo, whose military regime handed over power to the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari with Ekwueme as vice president in 1979,  in a statement by his media aide Kehinde Akinyemi, said: “The late Dr. Ekwueme was a selfless, disciplined and patriotic Nigerian who lived a worthy and exemplary life.

His irrepressible thirst for knowledge and education, which propelled his foray into many fields of intellectual pursuit and his distinguished role in the development of the architectural profession in Nigeria are shining examples to the younger generation, many of whom have, in fact, benefited from his philanthropy and goodwill.”

Similarly, Governor Amosun, in a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dayo Adeneye,said: “The contributions of Dr. Alex Ekwueme to the enthronement of an enduring democratic rule, is worthy of note and emulation, adding “his bold efforts to gather 34 eminent Nigerians (G34), to confront the former Military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, despite the risk, no doubt, fuelled the agitations for and the subsequent evolution of a democratic government, which has lasted for 18 years in the country.”

A pillar of unity — IBB

Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida retd, described Ekwueme as a pillar of unity, saying  his death is a big loss to the nation.

General Babangida, in a statement by his media aide, Malam Mahmud Abdullahi, said: “We lost Ekwueme at a time the invaluable role of elder statesmen like him is needed for national cohesion.’’

Babangida said he received the news of Ekwueme’s demise with a heavy heart but took solace in the exemplary life he lived.

He extolled the virtue of simplicity, which according to him, characterized the life of the former vice president.

He said that Ekwueme’s demise had left a very big vacuum in the quest for true nation building, national unity and peaceful co-existent that had the dream of every Nigerian.

“His simplicity is a rare virtue; with his intellectual depth, I have come to know him as a man living a very worthwhile live built on values and morality. We will miss him; Nigeria needs people like him now than ever. I condole with the family of the late Dr Ekwueme, the government and people of Anambra state and Nigerians.  I pray that God gives the family and all of us the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.’’

Unusual calm in Oko

Oko, Ekwueme’s home town was yesterday thrown into unusual calm as the news of the death of the former Vice President filtered into the town.

At the Federal Polytechnic, Oko which was founded by Ekwueme, both students and workers were in mournful mood. His country home was locked and his younger brother and traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Laz Ekwueme declined to speak to visitors. Even the President General of Oko community Mr. Cyprain Nwamuo also declined comments on the death.

Vanguard gathered from a reliable source that even the President General of the community does not have the power to make a statement on the death or otherwise of an eminent person like the former vice president.

He noted that it is the traditional ruler of the community that will tell the people of Oko of the news of the death of his brother is true or not, and since he hasn’t, they still regard the news of his death as rumour.

A huge loss to political establishment —Anyaoku

In his reaction, former Secretary General of Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, said:  ”Dr Alex Ekwueme’s death is a huge loss to the political and professional establishments of Nigeria. In his truly outstanding public service to the country, he represented at the highest level professionalism as a renowned architect, and cerebral political leadership as Vice President and great contributor to national public political discourse.

”His unforgettable legacies include not only the many public institutions that he designed as an architect, but more importantly, the adoption of the six geopolitical zones which he conceived and introduced into the country’s political lexicon and his seminal role in Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 as leader of the G34 group.

”My family joins the Ekwueme family in mourning the passing of this indisputably illustrious son of our country.”

We’ve lost a fine gentleman —Anenih

Former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, described the death of Dr Alex EKwueme as a great loss to the nation.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Chief Anenih described Ekwueme, who was  foundation chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, as a nationalist who played politics without bitterness.

Anenih said:   “With the death of Dr Alex Ekwueme, the tribe of principled politicians has been further depleted.  Nigeria has lost a nationalist, a detribalised politician and one who was not given to impropriety in the conduct of government business.

“Dr Ekwueme will sorely be missed by a vast majority of Nigerians who had the privilege of his leadership, political association and interactions. The PDP where both of us played leading roles will remember him for his sterling contribution to its birth and development.

“While I pray that the Almighty God would grant his soul eternal repose, it is my earnest wish that his family would be strong in this moment of grief to be able to bear this great loss.”

He was an outstanding democrat —Wike

In his reaction, Governor Nyesom Wike said Ekweme was an outstanding democrat, exemplary leader, according to a statement by his media aide, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu.

Expressing his condolence to the family of the late Ekwueme, the nation and people of Anambra state, Wike said: “The former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was an outstanding democrat, compassionate leader, true patriot and exemplary statesman. He would be missed by all lovers of democracy and development.”

A pillar of democracy—APC

In its tribute, the APC said Nigeria has lost a foremost patriot and pillar of democracy.

A tribute signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary described Ekwueme as a

political intelligentsia, a fine gentleman and a true patriot who demonstrated that politics and integrity are not incompatible.

The statement read: “The APC will remember the late Ekwueme as a stabilizing voice in Nigerian politics over the years. Many will attest that the late Ekwueme’s political ideas and interventions greatly and positively shaped the country’s political fabric. The Party recalls that at the 1994-95 constitutional conference, the late Ekwueme suggested a six-zone geo-political structure to create a more equitable system. That structure is now in operation in the country today.

“The late Ekwueme was also undoubtedly one of the strong pillars of democracy in the country.”

A thorough bred philantropist —Ambode

Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who expressed sadness over the demise of Dr. Alex Ekwueme, described him as a complete gentleman, thorough bred scholar, philanthropist and politician per excellence, who contributed his own quota to serving his country and humanity.

Ambode, in a statement yesterday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, said:  “Dr. Ekwueme was a man of many parts. He was a scholar of repute who had so many academic awards to his name.

Political Violence : Ex- kwara State Governor House set ablaze

Three people have been confirmed dead, while six people sustained severe injuries in Lafiagi, Kwara State as irate youths burnt down a part of the house of a former governor of Kwara State, Senator Shaaba Lafiagi.

The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kwara State, Mr. Henry Bilesanmi, confirmed

the death of three people, though some sources put the death toll at five.

Also, the Wakillin Lafiagi, Umaru Shaaba, said the dead victims included Abubakar Alhassan and Musa Abdullahi.

According to a death certificate from the General Hospital, Lafiagi, 24-year-old Abdullahi died from gunshot wounds in the femoral region.

The death certificate, which was signed on behalf of the hospital medical director by an official, identified simply as Mrs. Abdul, stated that Abdullahi was shot by soldiers in Lafiagi township.

The Wakillin Lafiagi told our correspondent on Saturday that over 300 youths had attempted to stop the former Kwara State governor from entering the town on Friday night.

He stated that Lafiagi, who is the senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, was attempting to enter the town from Ilorin with political associates for Saturday’s local government elections in the state.

Shaaba said the youths stopped the senator from entering the town because of uncompleted culverts and projects on Lafiagi Road, around Sodo River, about four kilometres to Lafiagi town.

He added that the youths had complained that there were avoidable deaths because of the non-completion of the projects.

Shaaba said, “The community boys complained that the place had recorded about four accidents within a short time; a couple had been killed as a result of that culvert. A Fulani was riding a motorcycle and ran into the culvert. There was a family travelling from Lagos to Abuja; because they did not know the road, they drove into the culvert.

“The youths then said, before Alhaji Shaaba (Lafiagi) and his political team would enter the town, the culvert should be covered. They also said the number of deaths that had been recorded because of the unfinished job was too high and that the culvert must be filled so that the people could use it. That was the genesis of it. By the time Shaaba came, over 300 youths had blocked the way.”

But the former governor was said to have invited the Divisional Police Officer in the area who tried in vain to mediate.

The senator was said to have later invited soldiers, who tried unsuccessfully to pacify the youths.

According to Shaaba, the security agencies later escorted the senator to his residence.

He said the aggrieved community members protested while security agents shot sporadically to disperse them.

He stated that in the ensuing pandemonium and sporadic shooting from security agents, three people were killed by bullets while six were injured.

It was gathered that when members of the community heard about the killing, they matched to the senator’s residence and burnt part of it.

According to the Deputy Director, Public Relations, 2 Division, Ibadan, Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Ezindu Idima, said, “The shooting had already taken place before our soldiers were deployed when the situation was getting out of hand.

“Our soldiers only came to bring the situation under control. They were not there before and during the shooting. What our soldiers did there was just to bring the situation under control. They were not involved in the shooting.”

Military Take Over in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s military has read out a statement after taking over the national broadcaster, ZBC, saying it has taken action to “target criminals”, BBC reports.

However, it said this was not “a military takeover of government” and President Robert Mugabe was safe.

Heavy gunfire and artillery were heard in northern suburbs of the capital, Harare, early on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe’s envoy to South Africa, Isaac Moyo, earlier dismissed talk of a coup, saying the government was “intact”.

The statement read out by Maj Gen Sibusiso Moyo came hours after soldiers overran the headquarters of ZBC. He said: “We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the president… and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.”

The statement added: “We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes… that are causing social and economic suffering in the country. As soon as we have accomplished our mission, we expect that the situation will return to normalcy.”

The statement did not name those targeted but a government source quoted by Reuters said Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo was among those detained.

It is not clear who is leading the military action.

Other key points of the statement included:

Citizens should remain calm and limit unnecessary movement

The military assures the Zimbabwean judiciary that its independence is guaranteed

Security services should “co-operate for the good of our country” and any provocation would “be met with an appropriate response”

All leave for the defence forces is cancelled and they should return to barracks immediately

Breaking: Buhari arrives Ebonyi on board NAF 540

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari arrived Ebonyi State onboard helicopter NAF 540.

President Buhari is on a two day working visit to the South East. This is in line with his earlier promise to effect the general feel of federal government by every zone in the Country.

The Chairman of All progressive Governors Forum, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha also promised to bring the attention of the federal government to the south eastern part of Nigeria, a promise that has started yielding fruits.

The Military helicopter carrying the President and his entourage landed at the Army Barracks, Nkwagu in Abakaliki around 11:20am.

The President was received by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, his Deputy, Eric Kelechi Igwe and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu.

Others include former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim former governor Sam Egwu among others.

Buhari Moves to Appoint 8 New Ministers, Restructure Ministries

* Power, works and housing ministry may be split into three

*Aviation and marine transport may be hived off from transportation

In a move to keep to his promise to the chieftains and loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to appoint more ministers to his cabinet, President Muhammadu Buhari is considering a tentative proposal to restructure some of the ministries, appoint eight new ministers to his cabinet and reshuffle the cabinet, THISDAY has learnt.

Presidency sources privy to the proposal informed THISDAY monday that the plan is to appoint eight new ministers who will all be politicians, to accommodate the yearnings of his party members including its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and at the same time position APC for the 2019 general elections.

In order to accommodate the eight new appointees to the cabinet, the plan is to get the president to split the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing into three ministries that will be manned by full ministers, and hived off the aviation and marine transport units from the Ministry of Transportation.

One minister will man Aviation and another may lead Marine Transportation.

A presidency source who spoke on the issue said the proposal that has been sent to the president provides for the appointment of eight new ministers, one representing each of the six geopolitical zones in the country and one from Lagos (who may be a nominee of Tinubu) and Kano State (who may be a nominee of Rabiu Kwankwaso).

Fashola is expected to retain Works and Road Transport, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau who is from Kano is expected to retain Ministry of Interior.

However, Police Affairs may be hived off from the Ministry of Interior.

The appointment of two more ministers from the two most populous states in the country is strategic and is aimed at ensuring that the appointees from Lagos and Kano play crucial roles in delivering both states to the APC in 2019.

The source also revealed that with the split of the power and transportation ministries, Fashola would most likely be made responsible for the newly created Ministry of Works and Roads Infrastructure, an appointee from the North-east geopolitical zone will be appointed to man the Ministry of Housing while an appointee from either the North-central zone or the South-east will be handed the Ministry of Power.

In the case of the Ministry of Transportation, once it is split, the current minister, Rotimi Amaechi, will be appointed to man the Ministry of Rail Transportation while Hadi Sirika who is currently a Minister of State in the transportation ministry (aviation) will most likely be made a full Minister of Aviation.

Another appointee will be given the Ministry of Marine Transport after it is hived off from the transportation ministry.

All the new appointments, said the source, will be done with the consultation of state governors.

“The proposal has been put together and sent to Mr. President for his final approval. It remains tentative for now, but if it meets the approval of the president, the announcement will be made public before the end of the month and the names of the nominees will be sent to the Senate for confirmation,” the source volunteered.

He also disclosed that the proposal includes a cabinet reshuffle which could see the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu redeployed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a new minister appointed to replace him as minister of state while Buhari continues to hold on to the petroleum ministry portfolio as the full minister.

At the last meeting of the National Executive Committee of the APC held last month in Abuja, Buhari had promised to appoint more ministers and members to the boards of federal parastatals.

The pledge was made to appease aggrieved members who had felt that they had been ditched after helping the party to win the 2015 elections.

He had said that the new appointees will be fit for purpose and will breathe new life into the administration.

Although Buhari has not yet publicly declared that he will run for a second term, the move is also targeted at empowering strong politicians who can deliver critical states during the 2019 elections.

Rotimi Amaechi vz Nyesome Wike Clash, What you need to know

Recently,  we the motorcade of the Executive Governor of Rivers State ran into the Convoy of the Honourable Minister of Transport,  Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

This led to infraction by the Security Aides of the two highly placed Political Office holders.

It's a known fact that both of them are grave political enemies whose contacts at any given time sparks off fireworks.

As a result of the in the incident,  there where allegations and counter allegations.

To this effect,  the Rivers State Police command has issued a press release.

POLICE PRESS BRIEFING

ALLEGED ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON THE LIFE OF
GOV. NYESOM E.WIKE

Gentlemen of the Press Good evening;
I have called this meeting to clear the air on allegations and counter allegations making the rounds of alleged assassination plot by two notable figures in the Country, in the persons of His Excellency Chief (Barr) Nyesom  E. Wike, the Executive Governor of Rivers State and Rt. (Hon) Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the Honourable Minister of Transportation, following a minor traffic infraction along Nkpogu  roundabout, Port Harcourt. For purposes of putting the records straight and in view of the public outcry in the Media which greeted these claims, I hereby make the following clarifications;

That on 11/11/2017 at about 1500hrs at Nkpogu junction, while the Hon. Minister of Transportation was passing through Elekahia to Nkpogu and at Nkpogu roundabout, a Police outrider in the convoy of His Excellency intercepted the Black Lexus 750 Jeep the Minister was driving just, as it was about negotiating the roundabout.

The outrider was there to make way for the on coming convoy of His Excellency which was about 400 metres away.

Police Investigation report revealed that two of the Minister’s convoy vehicles were already ahead of him while he was intercepted and stopped by the outrider.

It is not known how the outrider fell off his Bike as dent marks on the Lexus 750 Jeep were seen on the passenger’s side of the car.

A rowdy situation now followed with the Minister ferried by Security Agents away from the scene of the incident.

At this point, the Governor’s convoy was not within reach to the scene of this incident.
The Governor’s convoy eventually arrived the scene without the presence of the Hon. Minister.

Questions were thereafter asked by the Governor’s entourage as to what happened while the last lap of Policemen from the Minister’s convoy where questioned by the CSO to the Governor as to their presence at that location and material time.

I am aware that some altercations did occur around the scene of the incident. I wish to stress here that, the lives of the two dignitaries were not threatened as a result of this minor traffic incident.

It is of note that, the meeting of the two convoys at that point was coincidental and has no semblance of threat to life or intention to eliminate any person.

The Governor later proceeded to carry out a routine road inspection within the State, while the Minister attended the function that brought him to Port Harcourt.

I want to make this abundantly clear that all acts touching on misconduct by any Policemen in the course of this incident will be thoroughly Investigated and appropriate disciplinary action taken against any person  found wanting.

ARMY SERGEANT KILLS CAPTAIN, FOUR OTHERS, SELF IN BORNO

There was confusion in Chibok community, Borno State, on Sunday after a staff sergeant in the Nigerian Army, Silas Ninyo, shot dead a captain, four civilians and himself during an altercation.

Our correspondent learnt that Ninyo killed the captain, identified only as Mani, and the four others when he (Ninyo) was allegedly ordered by Mani to stop beating some civilians at a checkpoint.
According to an online medium, Sahara Reporters, which got the army’s situation report on the incident, the captain was providing security for worshippers during a church service when he received a distress call that Ninyo (93NA/36/2608) was beating up some civilians for some unknown reasons.

Our correspondent gathered that Mani (NA/14430) scolded the sergeant, freed the civilians and attempted to disarm Ninyo.

The later was said to have shot the captain dead before killing the four civilians.
He then shot himself in the head.

The corpses of the soldiers were reportedly taken to a military hospital in Yola, Adamawa State.
A reliable source in Chibok on Sunday confirmed the incident to our correspondent, noting that the army was investigating it.

The source said, “I can confirm that the shooting took place. I know Silas (Ninyo) and Mani very well. They were very close in that formation. I don’t know what would have caused the altercation. I am still trying to speak to their boss, a Major, to ascertain what really went wrong. The army is investigating the incident.”

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, could not be reached for comment on the incident as of press time.

He also had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone as of press time.
Meanwhile, two army lieutenants, identified simply as I.M. Akanni and S.E. Ayo, were killed in a road accident on Gwagwalada-Zuba Road in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Our correspondent learnt that the accident occurred on Saturday at about 10.30pm and the corpses of the officers had been deposited in the morgue of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.

It was gathered that Akanni (N/15752) and Ayo (N/16164), were attached to the 176 Guards Battalion, Keffi, Nasarawa State, and a memo of the incident was done to the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade headquarters, Abuja.

Our brains have about 8 GB of capacity for immediate recall, and only the most essential information will make the cut. This can leave us with a blurred picture of nonessential information. The human brain is not designed to help you handle with massive amounts of data. We’re bombarded with stimuli every day. If we processed and remembered everything, then it would probably make it difficult for us to function. Your brain sorts through all your experiences to weed out the significant and insignifcant things that we encounter.¹

The first time you read something, finishing it is the only aim.

It doesn’t matter how much you’ve been looking forward to seeing a movie or reading a book. Unless the content is linked to your survival, chances are that you’ll forget what you’ve seen or read soon after viewing it.

Part of this is because your primary objective was to watch the film or read the book. When you’ve never seen something, your urge to finish the story is your main concern. After you’ve satisfied your desire, you probably won’t remember what you’ve seen. Finishing the movie or book is not the same as remembering all the details.

Human beings store memories through a process called encoding. Our brain is better at encoding information when it can associate new information with pre-existing experiences.²

The first time we encounter information is akin to us passing strangers on the street. Your neurons process that you’ve encountered someone, and that’s the end of it. There’s no recognition, and after you leave the situation, you probably won’t remember who you saw.

Some people do remember what they see, though. Why?

You might feel frustrated when you can’t recall what you’ve just seen, but it can be even more maddening when you run into someone who seems to have absorbed everything. This is the friend that recites details from the movies that you watched months ago. Long after the finer points of a text have slipped your mind, they’re still talking about it. How do they do it?

These people don’t have extraordinary memories. They simply take in the information actively. Since they’re actively processing information, they are able to experience the book details or the movie scenes repeatedly in a short time. They revise and synthesize the information so that it becomes their own.

It’s like taking the same route every day and running into the same people. You begin to recognize people and observe more about them because they are already familiar to you. Likewise, your neurons can easily make new connections when they have been asked to revisit and analyze new information instead of passively observing it.

The key is to see, connect, and then repeat.

The more you actively engage with the content that you are consuming, the more readily you’ll remember it. As your neurons revisit the same subject over and over, it’s easier for them to make new connections.

Think of it like taking a walk through the woods. At first there is no path, but if you take the same route every day, eventually, you’ll create a trail. You’ll be able to move quickly and easily in a place where you used to have to move slowly. Your brain handles memory like this too. You want to build a well-worn path for your neurons.

Don’t rely on your initial memory

The first time you go through something, you’ll probably forget many details. You may find it difficult to absorb specifics because there’s too much new information. When you watch movies or read books, you may find yourself obsessed with what will happen next. Your goal is just to get to the end.

It’s helpful to revisit the content several times. You may find that since you already know what happens, you’ll be able to appreciate the details.

Replaying or rereading isn’t enough

You can look at the same piece of information over and over, but it doesn’t mean that it will stay in your head. Rote memorization (memorizing by repetition) doesn’t allow you to make meaningful connections with what you’re seeing.³

To remember something, you need to apply it. Instead of passively taking in information or actively trying to memorize it by rote, it’s important to make connections. If you can apply what you’ve learned, get feedback, and re-apply a concept with feedback, it’s much more likely to stick.

For example, reading a recipe alone won’t help you learn to cook. Cooking a meal and having the combined feedback of your taste-buds and the comments of others will stand out in your mind. Watching someone do an exercise never has the same impact as doing it yourself. A framework is all but useless unless you apply it.

When you apply a concept or practice to your life, it becomes easier to internalize the information. Think about the first time you had to travel to work versus now. At first, you had to think about each step on the route, but now, you don’t even have to think about it. It is the combination of repetition and application that solidifies neuron connections.

Have a question at the back of your mind before you read/watch it

When you pick up a book or sit down to watch a movie, have a purpose in mind. If you don’t, your default mode will simply be to get to the end of the book or film. Have a question that you’d like to answer before you begin.

For example, reading The Power of Habit without a purpose will not be very helpful. It will seem useless to anyone who isn’t ready to build a habit no matter how good the book is. On the other hand, if you think of a bad habit that you’d like to quit before you start reading, you can instantly connect what you’re reading with your own life.

When you spot related chapters or ideas in books, find ways to connect them. Highlight them, write notes, or clip the sections that are related. Taking notes by hand is an especially valuable way to help you remember important concepts.⁴

People who watch lots of movies or read lots of books, but can’t remember them, waste a lot of time. They haven’t taken in any information that will actually help them. To avoid forgetting everything you see, apply it immediately after you see it, and revisit the concepts often.

Have a mind like a steel trap

Chances are that by tomorrow you will forget what you’ve read in this article unless you save it, highlight it, and make a point of relating it to your life. Bookmark this and come back to it so that you can remember what you need to do to have better recall on the media you consume.

Watching movies and reading mindlessly is a a waste of time. Make the most of everything that you see and read by finding ways to engage with the content. Think of what you’ll be missing if you allow these learning opportunities to pass you by.

History was made today in Imo State as the people of Umuoyima Autonomous Community in Owerri Municipal LGA,  Owerri Zone, Imo State conferred on Ugwumba Uche Nwosu the full rights of Citizenship of an Owerri Man.

This uncommon event took place at the Palace of the Traditional Ruler of Umuoyima Autonomous Community,  Hrh Eze Theophilous Uba, the Oyima of Umuoyima.

The entire Community trooped out enmass in support and endorsement of the development which brought fanfare to the Community.

It was a colourful event that attracted the high and mighty in Imo State.

Performing the ceremony,  the Traditional Ruler of the Community, Hrh,  Eze Uba , the members of the Eze's Cabinet and the entire people of the Community maintained that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu is a humble servant that every Community must envy to have.

Commending, the Traditional ruler backed by the unanimous decision of the entire Community described Ugwumba Uche Nwosu as a humble servant whose humility,carriage, wisdom, and humane Nature qualified him to be given such a rare opportunity in the history of Igboland and beyond.

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu was confirmed a true son of UMUOYIMA autonomous Community,  with full rights and privileges accorded .

it was Home Coming ceremony. He was immediately provided with a parcel of land to build his Obi which marks full indiginization. 

The Men,  Women, and the Youths both Male and Female all were wild in jubilation.

By this development,  

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu has dual Citizenship and dual Zoneship
