HEALTH SECTOR : MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH RECORDED

The Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETSCO) says it has carried out research and development of a Phyto-drug for the treatment of epilepsy. The Minister of Science and Technology announced this at the closing ceremony of the one week Technology Expo held at Eagle Square, Abuja.

He said the drug was discovered by one of its 17 agencies charged with the responsibility of identifying local solution for local problems. According to the Director General of the agency, Prof. Sunday Thomas, the anti-epilepsy drug was developed from the root of the plant belonging to the Celeastraceae family, which was identified and investigated for its chemical and biological properties for the treatment of epilepsy.

He said that the Phytochemical, antimicrobial brine shrimp lethality btest and toxicity test were carried out. The toxicity test, he said showed that the plant material was quite safe for consumption.

According to him, am antiepileptic studies carried out indicated that the plant extract was effective in the control of epileptic seizures in Swiss albino mice of mixed sexes.

JAMB: Guidelines for Saturday’s mock UTME exam released

The Joint Admissions & Matriculation Board (JAMB) has has suspended registrationis for the ongoing 2017 UTME Examination .This was done to enable candidates who are taking part in the 2017 UTME Mock Examination set to hold today Saturday, April 8, 2017.

JAMB candidates According to Prof. Is-haq Oloyede OFR, JAMB Registrar the suspention of registartion starts from 8pm Friday 7th of April, 2017 and resume on Monday 10th of April 2017. According to the guidelines released, the body said will enable prospecting candiadte take part in the mock exercise at CBT Centres on Saturday.

According to JAMB’s guidelines candidates for the mock examination are to check for their examination venue, time using either registration number or e-mail address on here.

Email and text messages have been sent also to candidates. Candidates would be admitted to their respective centres by the e-slip

Enugu Assembly orders EEDC out of state

THE Enugu state House of Assembly, yesterday, held an emergency sitting where it resolved to send the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, out of the state.

The quit notice is as result of various allegations by electricity consumers in the state that resulted to protests to the state legislature. Moving a motion for the firm to vacate the state, Hon. Chinedu Nwamba, representing Nsukka East state constituency on behalf of 22 others, alleged numerous unwarranted activities of EEDC in the provision of electricity services to the people of the state which he said had reached an alarming and unbearable stage.

Once upon a time a young man named Alemu decided it was time that he marry, but he looked around his village and saw no one he fancied. So he set off in search of a bride.

Alemu headed toward the mountains. The landscape became rockier and full of bushes, prime hiding places for lions, and Alemu was very afraid of lions. Suddenly he stopped in his tracks. He heard a noise. Was it a lion’s roar? The sound terrified him, and he whirled around and ran as fast as he could toward the open country.

He came to a large, open pasture and stopped to catch his breath. Amid a sea of grazing sheep, he saw a shepherdess. The moment Alemu saw her, he fell in love. He waded through the flock of sheep and introduced himself.

Now Alemu was handsome and funny, and before long the young woman, whose name was Nebiat, was charmed. She was a simple girl, beautiful, diligent and warm-hearted, and the longer the two young people talked, the more convinced Alemu became that she must be his bride. And soon Alemu had persuaded Nebiat to take him to meet her father.

Nebiat’s father was pleased when Alemu asked to marry his daughter; the young man seemed a good match. Before long the two married, and together they returned to Alemu’s village.

At first all was well, but soon Nebiat realized her husband, for all his good qualities, was a lazy man. All day long she cooked and cleaned, mended clothes and worked in the garden, and meanwhile Alemu grew lazier and fatter.

One day Nebiat had had enough. She woke her husband from his afternoon nap. “Alemu,” she pleaded, “come help me with the chores. Together our work will take half as much time and effort.”

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu has commended OCDA Boss on achievements, charges other Heads of parastatals to buckle up

The General Manager of Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA),Hon. Barr. Obinna Amagwula has being commended by the Chief of Staff, Imo State Government House, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu for his achievements as the OCDA boss.

The Chief of Staff, who has penchant for hardwork made this commendation during the meeting he had with all Heads of Parastatals at Sam Mbakwe Exco Chamber.

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu while addressing them among others singled out Hon. Obinna Amagwula and the entire Staff of OCDA informing that since Barr. Amagwula took over as OCDA Boss, the IGR from OCDA to the coffers of Imo State Government has risen tremendously, attributing it to hard work and dedication to duty.

According to Chief of Staff, this is commendable because it is helping the Government tackle her economic challenges.

The free Education, payment of Workers Salaries, Urban Renewal policy of the Government and other matters depend on the financial strength of the State. The monthly allocation is not enough to carry all these and that is why the business units of the Government should live up to expectation like OCDA is doing, he added.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos zone, this evening uncovered yet another large sum of suspected laundered money to the tune of N448,850,000 (Four hundred and forty eight million, eight hundred and fifty thousand naira) only in a shop at LEGICO Shopping Plaza, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The money stashed in several Ghana Must Go bags were in N500 and N1000 denominations, hidden in a shop awaiting conversion into foreign currency.

Relying on information provided by a concerned whistle blower, operatives of the Commision swooped on the shopping complex and sought the identity of the owners of two shops, LS 64 and LS 67 which were under locks and keys. The shops had signages of Bureau de Change. Inquries about the owner of shop 64 indicated he had not been seen for a long time, as they claimed the shop had not been opened for businesss for close to two years. Several calls were put to the owner of shop 67 but there was no response.

The attention of the plaza's chairman and some traders were drawn in order to force the shops open. There was no money found in shop 67, but in shop 64, heaps of "Ghana Must Go" bags were found loaded on the floor of the shop.

When the bags were unzipped they were found to contain bundles of naira notes totalling N448,850,000.
Traders interviewed at the premises claimed they were not aware such money was housed in there, as the place hardly opens for business.

The Commission is investigating the matter in order to unravel the owner and source of the money.
