IMO DEPUTY GOVERNOR TASKS IMOLITES ON AGRICULTURE, FOOD SECURITY
The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere has enjoined the people of Imo State especially the youth to join hands in ensuring that there is food security in the State by engaging in farming and other agricultural enterprises.
According to a press release signed by the Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor on Media, Uche Onwuchekwa, the number two citizen decried the attitude of some youth who feel that engaging in farming is a demeaning vocation.

security through commercial and mechanized farming, he posited that those engaged in subsistence farming are important since their produce can complement in boosting the food reserve of the State and the country at large. He described such type of farming as small scale farming, while advising them to embrace and adopt modern farming methods for greater yields.
He described farmers as highly revered citizens in civilized nations because of their strategic contributions to the food reserve of the nation. He remarked that only nations that are capable of feeding its teeming population can qualify to be recognized as great nations. He mentioned countries like China, United States of America, Great Britain and some countries in Africa like South Africa as highly respected in the comity of nations because of their capacity to feed their citizens.
He therefore encouraged the youth of Imo State to utilize the opportunities Governor Okorocha has extended to them through his "Millionaires Club", an empowerment programme for young entrepreneurs especially those interested in any area of agriculture.
He however emphasized that beyond food production for the citizenry, Imo State based entrepreneurs, industrialists and their foreign counterparts would also rely on the farmers for raw materials in many areas of production.
The number two citizens described farming as the only way out of the present economic downturn in the country since it will save Nigeria from capital flight occasioned by large scale importation of food items, which ordinarily have high yields in Nigerian soil.
He therefore called on the people of Imo State to join hands in an effort by the State and Federal governments to make Nigeria a global food basket thereby diversifying the economy, which he said will bring about the needed development and sustainable economic development of the country.
